About the Program

What is AsUR

AsUR (Academic Success and Undergraduate Readiness) is an intensive student support program designed to help students strengthen executive functioning skills that support success in college. AsUR provides individualized mentoring, structured support, and a strengths-based community for students who want help developing skills such as time management, organization, planning, and task initiation.

Who is the program designed for

AsUR primarily supports first- and second-year students who would benefit from structured support while adjusting to the independence and academic expectations of college.

Do I need a diagnosis to participate

No. Students do not need a formal diagnosis to apply. AsUR is open to students who feel they would benefit from additional support developing executive functioning strategies.

Application & Admission

When can I apply

Applications are accepted year-round.

When are students admitted into the program

Interviews and admissions take place during specific periods:

  • During the summer term
  • Over winter break
  • At the beginning of the fall and spring semesters before the UNC census date (typically within the first 10 days of the semester).

Applications submitted outside these periods will be reviewed and held until the next admission window.

Is there a waitlist

Because the program has limited capacity, students may be placed on a waitlist if space is not immediately available.

How many students are in the program

AsUR typically serves around 120 students at a time.

Participation & Expectations

How often do students meet with their mentor

Students meet once per week for about 45 minutes. Meetings are scheduled around both the student’s and mentor’s class and lab schedules and are typically held at the same day and time each week. Students are expected to attend meetings as scheduled and communicate any absences with their mentor and AsUR staff in advance.

Are meetings in person or virtual

For students on the main campus, meetings are typically held in person.

How long do students stay in the program

Students typically participate in AsUR for one to two academic years, depending on their needs and goals.

Executive Functioning

What are executive functioning skills

Executive functioning skills help students plan, organize, start tasks, manage time, and monitor their progress on assignments and responsibilities.

Why are executive functioning skills important in college

College requires students to manage multiple deadlines, long-term assignments, and independent schedules. Executive functioning skills help students stay organized, prioritize tasks, and follow through on academic responsibilities.

Fit & Referrals

How do I know if AsUR is right for me

AsUR may be a good fit if you:

  • struggle with time management or organization
  • have difficulty starting assignments or keeping track of deadlines
  • want structured support and accountability
  • are early in your college experience and want help building strong academic habits.
Can faculty or advisors refer students

Faculty, advisors, and campus partners are welcome to encourage students to apply if they believe the AsUR program could be helpful.
