First-Generation Student Support

App State First-Gen LogoWe're here to support you every step of the way. Appalachian State University is part of the FirstGen Forward initiative, a national network of over 400 colleges and universities committed to helping first-generation students succeed in college and beyond.

First-Gen Celebration

Each semester, App State celebrates our first-generation college students. Students enjoy a photo booth, food, pictures with Yosef, and giveaway items. Graduating students can also pick up their graduation cords during the celebration. This event aligns with the national first-gen celebration happening on college campuses across the country.

Residential Learning Community

The FirstGen Ascent Residential Learning Community is an intentional living-and-learning environment designed especially for first-generation college students. This community seeks to empower first-generation mountaineers to thrive academically, socially, and personally through a residential experience that fosters identity, community, and purpose.

First-year students will enroll in US 1001, College Success Seminar, with Dr. Lamont Sellers, during the fall semester. This survey course provides opportunities to identify, discuss, and practice a variety of strategies to foster success in college, including information on campus resources and opportunities.
