Quick Referral Guide for Faculty and Staff
This Quick Referral Guide provides faculty and staff with help in determining which referral pathway is most appropriate.
Referrals are reviewed during normal business hours and are not monitored after hours, on weekends, or during official University holidays.
Academic Referrals are designed for concerns rooted in academic performance or engagement. If your concern arises from observations within the learning environment—such as estimated grades, participation, attendance, or classroom presence—the academic referral is likely the most appropriate route.
The Case Management Team, housed within the Office of the Dean of Students helps faculty and staff address concerns related to personal, behavioral, or wellness-related issues. When your referral is based on a student's personal challenges or behaviors outside the academic scope, use the Care and Concern Referral to route the student to the most appropriate support.
If you are concerned about the immediate safety of a student, you should call the Appalachian Police Department at 828-262-8000 or, if off campus, 911.
